The trailer is becoming part of the truck’s computer

ZF is demonstrating high-speed truck-to-trailer connectivity at IAA Transportation 2026, opening the door to software-defined functions across the whole combination.

The electrical connection between a truck and trailer has traditionally carried relatively limited information. ZF is now demonstrating technology at IAA Transportation 2026 designed to turn the combination into a much more closely connected digital system.

Its Truck-Trailer Link concept uses high-speed communications between the prime mover and trailer, allowing trailer systems to exchange substantially richer information with the truck. ZF says the architecture supports new software-defined functions and forms part of its wider push towards software-defined commercial vehicles.

The company is also demonstrating over-the-air software updating and more centralised vehicle intelligence as commercial vehicles move towards architectures in which functions can increasingly be added or changed through software.

Why it matters in Australia

For fleets, the interesting part is not the phrase “software-defined vehicle”. It is what happens when the truck and trailer begin operating as one connected information system.

Potential applications include better visibility around trailers, safety functions, diagnostics, maintenance information and more sophisticated assistance during yard and reversing operations.

It also creates questions that will become increasingly relevant to Australian operators: who owns the combination’s operating data, how long it is retained, whether it can become compliance or crash evidence, how aftermarket trailers remain compatible and how cyber security is managed across equipment from different manufacturers.
