NHVR urges Queensland OSOM operators to recheck permit conditions before travel

Queensland OSOM operators are being warned that permit conditions can change daily. The NHVR says routes, mass, speed, travel times and third-party approvals need checking before each journey.

Queensland operators moving oversize and overmass (OSOM) loads have been urged to check their permit conditions before every journey, with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator warning that requirements can change from day to day.

NHVR Director Northern Region Kelli Ready said the conditions protect roads and infrastructure and can cover approved mass, speed, routes, travel times and third-party approvals, including from Queensland Rail and Ergon Energy.

“We know some operators or drivers choose the most direct route, but we are urging them to check the permit conditions associated with each trip because conditions can change day by day,” Ms Ready said.

For operators, that means confirming the approved route and applicable conditions for each movement, checking whether other infrastructure owners must approve the journey, and reviewing Queensland Transport and Main Roads condition reports before setting off.

The NHVR said a permit may be required where a road is not part of an authorised network, allowing the road manager to assess whether the proposed movement is suitable. Non-compliance can attract enforcement action.
