Safety improvements on the Cunningham Highway between Tregony and Maryvale are complete, allowing the Fisher Park rest areas to reopen.
The four-kilometre project northeast of Warwick strengthened and repaired the pavement, widened the road and shoulders, added guardrails, and installed wide centre lines and audio tactile markings to alert drivers when they drift from their lane. Roadside hazards were also removed.
Transport and Main Roads says construction finished in September 2026. The joint government announcement followed on 6 October.
Funding covers a broader corridor package
The Australian Government has confirmed to WWTG that the broader Cunningham Highway Safety Package comprises $31.8 million in Commonwealth funding and $7.95 million from Queensland: $39.75 million in total, rounded to $39.8 million in the announcement.
A departmental spokesperson said that package includes the completed Tregony–Maryvale improvements, the Lake Moogerah Road intersection upgrade and additional safety treatments along the Cunningham Highway corridor. The Commonwealth contribution includes an extra $7.9 million committed at the 2024–25 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook to address cost pressures and ensure delivery.
TMR’s project page lists a narrower $28.85 million investment: $25.2 million for Tregony–Maryvale and $3.65 million through the Southern Queensland Region Mass Action Safety Treatment Program. Its published split is $23.08 million Commonwealth and $5.77 million Queensland. Those figures should not be presented as the value or funding split for the entire corridor package.
Rest stop returns
The Fisher Park rest areas were closed during construction. Their reopening restores a stopping place on the freight route linking South East Queensland and the Darling Downs.
The works are intended to reduce the likelihood and severity of serious crashes; the completion announcement does not establish a measured reduction in crashes.
